Differentiate between Fake and Real Diamonds with Asteria

Updated: Feb 4, 2025

Welcome to Ask Asteria session where you ask, and we answer all about diamonds and jewellery. Today we will be differentiating between a real and a fake diamond.

Did you know how cubic zircons are widely called American diamonds? Cubic Zirconia is called American diamond as the US was the first country to manufacture it in large quantities and thus named it American diamond.

A man-made cubic zirconia or American Diamonds resembles the actual diamonds in appearance. An identical duplicate of genuine diamond makes it very difficult to differentiate in the first glance an American diamond to a real one. But various tests can be performed to determine if the diamond is an AD or a real.

1. The first test is to look for scratches in the stone; a real diamond won't have any due to its extreme hardness.

2. The second technique involves inhaling fog onto the stone to perform a test. Real diamonds rapidly clean up because they are excellent heat conductors.

3. The third technique involves placing a stone in a glass that is 3/4 full of pure water. Due to its high density, an actual diamond would sink.

4. The dot test where one has to create two small dots and place a real and an AD diamond on top of the dots. A cubic zircon will always be see through because of its glass nature whereas a real diamond will never reflect the dot.

Cubic zirconia is a man-made stone; hence it has no astrological significance. Thus, even after the similarity of appearance, a cubic zircon diamond will never be a substitute because of the don’t has the same qualities. Let us know what you think of cubic zircons!
